Book Discussion: “Our Veterans” by Jasper Craven Et Al

Past event
Sep 13, 2022, 7 to 8 PM

Please join authors Suzanne Gordon, Steve Early, and Jasper Craven, on Tuesday, September 13, at 7 PM at Phoenix Books Burlington, 191 Bank Street, downtown Burlington, VT, for a discussion of "Our Veterans: Winners, Losers, Friends, and Enemies on the New Terrain of Veterans Affairs."

This book explores the physical, emotional, social, economic, and psychological impact of military service and the problems that veterans face when they return to civilian life.

The authors critically examine the role of advocacy organizations, philanthropies, corporations, and politicians who purport to be "pro-veteran." They describe the ongoing debate about the cost, quality, and effectiveness of healthcare provided or outsourced by the Department of Veterans Affairs. They also examine generational divisions and political tensions among veterans.

"Our Veterans" proposes a new agenda for veteran affairs linking service provision to veterans to the quest for broader social programs benefiting all Americans. It is a call to action by everyone concerned about health equity.

Jasper Craven is a freelance journalist and Vermont native who has reported on military and veterans affairs for VT Digger, New York Times, American Prospect, The Atlantic, New Republic, The Baffler, and many others. Jasper is a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy and Boston University.

Suzanne Gordon, co-founder of the Veterans Healthcare Policy Institute and author of many books, including, Wounds of War: How the VA Delivers Health, Healing, and Hope to the Nation's Veterans.

Steve Early, a longtime CWA organizer in New England, co-founder of Labor for Bernie, and the author of four previous books about labor and politics.
