Lynnette Combs to present organ recitals celebrating 40 years in Vermont
Lynnette Combs, organist and choirmaster at Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier, is excited to announce a series of organ recitals celebrating her 40 years of playing the organ in Vermont. There will be four recitals, one in each of the four churches where she has worked since moving to Vermont in 1981. Admission is by donation. All donations in Middlebury, Burlington and Barre will benefit the Governor's Institute on the Arts. Donations in Montpelier will go towards the church's piano acquisition fund. For more information, contact Ms. Combs at homeplacegirl@gmail.com or contact each church directly.
Sunday, September 11, 4 p.m. Friday, September 16, 7 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 4 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 4 p.m.
The First Church of Barre, Universalist, 19 Church Street, Barre First Baptist Church, 81 St. Paul Street, Burlington
Christ Episcopal Church, 64 State Street, Montpelier
United Methodist Church, 43 N. Pleasant Street, Middlebury
Each recital will include some pieces that have a special connection to that organ, including three compositions written especially for Ms. Combs. Each organ was built by a different company and speaks with a distinctive voice in a unique acoustic: an original 1864 E&G.G. Hook in Burlington; an unchanged 1893 Hutchings in Middlebury, a 1978 neo-Baroque instrument by Berkshire in Barre; and a 1972 Karl Wilhelm, inspired by North German organbuilders of the 1600's, in Montpelier.
Years served in the four churches:
1982-1984: United Methodist Church, Middlebury 1988-2009: First Church of Barre, Universalist, Barre 2009-2015: First Baptist Church, Burlington 2015-present: Christ Episcopal Church, Montpelier
Ms. Combs has been passionate about pipe organs and the music written for them since her senior year in high school, when she heard, for the first time live, an organist improvising and "pulling out all the stops". After receiving a music degree from Swarthmore College and further organ studies with Nancy Ludwig, she made finding an organ to play a priority when moving to a new location.
An important part of Ms. Combs' passion for the pipe organ is celebrating its uniqueness, power, beauty, and complexity; she delights in introducing the instrument to newcomers, especially young people. She has given organ recitals in many Vermont towns. She is delighted that the Governor's Institute on the Arts, a division of the Governor's Institutes in Vermont, will be receiving most of the donations received at the recitals. The GIA is a statewide non-profit that holds summer camps for high school students, who can explore the arts in a supportive and stimulating environment.
