As a white person, I have struggled with the notion that many of the comforts in my life have been gained through the suffering of others -- namely, formerly-enslaved African people and their descendants. Of course, I have cherished friends and family members who take issue with this very idea. Yet the more I read and learn, the harder it becomes to ignore this realization.
Personally, I have grown and experienced relief and inspiration in exploring the roots of this concern. I have offered and found support from others, including many white neighbors, who have joined me in seeking to understand our "white supremacy culture."
This is what is known as a "hot button issue," no doubt about it. Many people get angry by merely reading these words. I have found it worth wondering about why the term generates such heat (and sometimes, aggression). I observe that many (most?) white people are eager to show that they are NOT racist. This doesn't surprise me. I feel it too, very strongly. The goodness in us clamors to be recognized!
I have found that our goodness can be guided and effectively encouraged when it takes the hand of our own inner curiosity, and dares to trust, and to learn.
Several years ago, a group of neighbors established a setting in which to explore the complexity of race relations in our country, including our roles and responsibilities. We named our group "MRVARI: The Mad River Valley Anti-Racism Initiative," and resolved to meet once a month, in order to support one another's growth, struggles, and efforts.
For three years, we've been meeting on the 4th Sunday of each month, from 6:30-8:00 pm, at the Village Meeting House (ground floor of the Waitsfield Church). Our next meeting is this Sunday 6/28. We hope you'll join us (unvaccinated participants please wear masks)!
You don't have to have any particular knowledge or political leanings to participate -- just an open heart, and a genuine desire to discover things that have been difficult to see (through no fault of your own).
We look forward to the work ahead, and to seeing you Sunday evening!
Respectfully,
Wrenn Compere, facilitator for MRVARI
