The Underhill Historical Society is hosting a tribute and exhibit of paintings by Underhill folk artist Walter Scheffley on August 28 from 3 to 5 at the Old Schoolhouse on Pleasant Valley Road in Underhill Center.
Walt and his family lived on Stevensville Road from 1953 to 1999, when he moved to Minneapolis to live near his son. An industrial and landscape designer by profession, Walt began painting while caring for his ailing wife. Using ordinary latex house paint and odd canvasses such as tree slabs, barns, and masonite, he created meticulous, witty scenes of everyday life, blending the old with the new and frequently offering his own political or social commentary in the deceptively ordinary scenes.
Walt's portraits and Vermont scenes often included his Underhill friends and neighbors. His pieces were known for their detail and satirical humor. Several Walt Scheffley paintings will be on display. You will recognize many places and perhaps some of your neighbors. We hope you will join us for this fun event celebrating this fascinating Underhill artist. Refreshments will be served.
