Julia Casey talks about...
the Rupert Counterfeiters, the Crane brothers
The Dorset Historical Society's Third-Thursday Lunch-Lecture on August 18 will feature Julia Casey who will talk about her research on the Crane brothers of Rupert.
While researching the location of Reuben Harmon's Rupert coinage mint, Julia Casey came across the story of the Crane brothers. The Cranes were residents of Rupert in the late-1700s and were notorious counterfeiters – with national implications. The Cranes mainly produced fraudulent paper money, but there is evidence that they were also involved in coinage. There is also evidence that the Cranes used the Rupert mint machinery to strike counterfeit coins at their makeshift operation on the side of Mount Antone. This same machinery had been used by Harmon to mint authorized Vermont coppers. Julia will discuss the facts and legends comprising the story of the Crane brothers.
