Come to this great stage of fools! This July, the Chelsea Funnery leaps back onto the outdoor stage with its premiere production of the classic tragedy King Lear. Shakespeare's timeless tale is brought to life as never before by this fantastic ensemble, ages 12-18. Amidst stage combat, clowning, and original song, these young actors grapple with fraught familial dynamics, political chaos, and the nature of reality itself in a production that may leave you wondering: "who is it that can tell me who I am?" This heartfelt ensemble brings the text to life with such energy that the story can be enjoyed by the Shakespearean novice and seasoned veteran alike King Lear will be performed outdoors Friday, July 22nd at 6:00 pm, and Saturday, July 23rd at 4:00 pm. The "Get Thee To The Funnery" Shakespeare Program in Chelsea, Vermont, is a two-week summer theatre immersion program. Originally founded in 2001, the program is run by Tess Holbrook, Isabella Byrne, Sadie Holbrook, Louisa Holbrook, Ian Kimmel, Al Taylor-Young, and Marian Zens.
Our mission at The Chelsea Funnery is to offer an affordable summer enrichment program to encourage positive use of time, creativity, energy, healthy community engagement, and to support youth empowerment, self-esteem, and team building in the Chelsea-Tunbridge area. We accept any student regardless of their ability to pay. The program emphasizes community, creativity, and taking personal and creative risks while working with each student to develop their personal style and skill set at their own pace and level.
