Film scholar Rick Winston will present a program, "Hollywood's Greatest Year: 1939," featuring nineteen film clips, on Wednesday, July 20, at 7:30 PM at the Unadilla Theatre, East Calais. Many film historians have cited the year 1939 as the high point of the Hollywood studio system. The list of well-loved classics from that year is impressive: they feature Dorothy in the land of Oz, Scarlett O'Hara at Tara, Heathcliff on the moors, Mr. Smith in Washington, Young Abe Lincoln in Illinois, and Ninotchka in Paris. We'll see excerpts from these and other films, and I'll discuss the various factors that made this year such a rich one. Suggestion donation is $10.
