VERMONT SOCIAL JUSTICE FESTIVAL BEGINS A MONDAY FILM SERIES, 7/11, 7/18/, 7/25, ALL 7:30 PM

Chandler Music Hall and the Playhouse Theater in Randolph present a three-film series addressing Environmental Justice issues. The films tell the stories of three indigenous communities as they live through exploitation by corporate interests, inadequate government response, and the courageous struggle for justice by ordinary citizens in the impacted communities.

The films will be shown at 7:30 PM on three consecutive Monday evenings, each with a brief introduction. Following each film, there will be an opportunity to discuss and share reactions and learnings.

Tar Creek - July 11
The story of the worst environmental disaster you've never heard of. Tar Creek flows through the Quapaw reservation in the Northeast corner of Oklahoma. It is also the site of lead, zinc and rare earth metals. This film was chosen because it illustrates Environmental Justice - or should we say injustice - involving Indigenous US citizens.

There's Something in the Water - July 18
This film shows not only the injustices and injuries caused by environmental racism, but the heroic fight waged by Indigenous and African Nova Scotian women. This film was chosen because it shows how persistent nonviolent activism can impact even the most stubborn governmental lethargy.

People of A Feather - July 25
The Inuit on the Belcher Islands in Canada's Hudson Bay share their intimate knowledge of their environment through the life cycle of the Eider - a bird whose down and feathers are the warmest in the world. Climate Change and the demand for the electricity produced by Hydro-Quebec are changing the habitat of the bird and the Inuit. This film was chosen as an excellent example of indigenous wisdom and its interface with modern science.
