A public reading of "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July," by Frederick Douglass. Community members are asked to join and read a section of the speech. No sign-up in advance is needed, and Rokeby will provide sections of the speech for individuals to read.
Following the reading, Rokeby Museum will have a public discussion on the legacy of the speech.
Delivered on July 5, 1852, in Rochester, New York, Douglass' speech reflects on the American values of liberty, citizenship, and freedom, and the hypocrisy of not bestowing these values to the enslaved population in America.
