I love watching the Met HD broadcasts or catch an opera/musical theatre performance on PBS. However, there is nothing like seeing a live performance. Last Thursday, I saw the Opera Company of Middlebury (OCM) put on "the Italian Girl in Algiers". The production was so good, so funny and creative. The great thing about live performance is the energy of the musician and singers and the staging is always so new!
If you missed this OCM production, but you want to give opera a chance, check out the Green Mountain Opera Festival (GMOF). They will put on two fully staged operas next week, The Rape of Lucretia and La Cenerentola (Cinderella) See Greenmountainoperafestival.com. My Husband and I got a sample of the two operas at a free concert at Stowe this past Sunday. The singing was amazing and the acting compelling.
Not sure you want to take a dive into the wonderful world of opera, consider the GMOF concert Wednesday,June 11, 7:30PM at St. Paul's Cathedral in Burlington. The entire company will sing selected opera arias, but also musical theatre tunes and song from the American Songbook. I'm sure after you hear the amazing talent featured at the festival, you will want to hear more! You can get tickets online or at the door ($25.00 or student/senior tickets &20.00) .
Shameless plug time! My son, Geoffrey Penar will be featured, singing a duet from the musical "Into the Woods".
Support our local opera and theatre groups. They are a great investment!
