The Johnson Racial Justice and Social Equity Committee would like to invite everyone to join us at 3 PM on July 9th at Legion Field for a group reading of Frederick Douglass' landmark speech, "What, to the slave, is the 4th of July?" This speech is perhaps the most widely known of all of Frederick Douglass' writings, and he asks all of us, even those who consider themselves committed to a more equitable society, to examine our own role in perpetuating inequities ourselves. We will meet at 3:00 p.m. at legion Field by the pizza oven, with a backup plan of using the musical stage in case of rain.
If you would like to participate and read a passage of the speech yourself, please sign up on the Google form below. We will assign everyone who is interested a couple of paragraphs to read, and go around the circle until the entire speech is read.
We will also have our Inclusivity Statement t-shirts on hand for sale, for those who wish to support our work. Another way to support this work is by sending your contribution to the town of Johnson with the Racial Justice and Social Equity Committee in the memo line.
Thank you to all who have shown up to support our work in the past, and to all those who will continue to show up in the future.
Anyone with any questions about this event or others we are putting on as a committee, please feel free to reach out.
