Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, is an annual holiday that commemorates the day the last slaves in Galveston, Texas were told of their freedom on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 by then President Abraham Lincoln.
