Hello Neighbors -
The Starksboro Historical Society invites you to meet at the Norton Cemetery (also known as the Butler Cemetery) , across from 1678 Ireland Rd. on Saturday June 18th at 10 AM to talk about restoring old cemeteries in Starksboro. The Norton Cemetery includes graves from as early as 1847 and the Vice President from the Vermont Old Cemeteries Association will be with us to talk about what's involved in cleaning and repairing old gravestones. This is not a workday, but it is the first step in the Starksboro Historical Society's planning for future restoration work in our old town cemeteries. We will have a hands-on demonstration of the proper way to clean old stones so that they're not damaged in the cleaning process. We'll also discuss options for resetting and repairing stones. Kevin Hanson has put together a database of the cemeteries in Starksboro, and that has already generated some interesting comments and new information we will share. We hope the morning helps us move forward learning about, and honoring, the folks whose resting places are here in Starksboro, and gain a greater appreciation for the town's history.
