Buckthorn/Invasives Removal Presentation at Monkton Central School

Thanks to the Association of Vermont Conservation Commissions' award of a tiny grant Monkton's Conservation Commission is hosting a free one-hour presentation by Travis Hart, Habitat Biologist with Vermont Fish and Wildlife, Saturday, June 18th, at 9:00 a.m. at Monkton Central School (036 Monkton Rd, North Ferrisburgh, VT 05473). We will meet in the school parking lot and proceed to the woods behind the school.

Travis will discuss invasive plants in relation to forest health and wildlife habitat. This will include an overview of common invasive plants that can be found in the state as well as various potential treatment/removal methods and why invasive plant management is important for our forests and wildlife. Travis will also discuss programs available to provide potential cost-share funds to assist private landowners with larger invasive plant issues on their own lands as well as additional wildlife habitat-oriented practices.

Travis was born in Rutland and grew up in Wells, Vermont. He attended the University of Vermont and received a degree in Natural Resources with a focus in wildlife biology. For the past 6 years Travis has worked for VT Fish and Wildlife as a habitat biologist managing state lands in the Rutland district as well as assisting private landowners with technical expertise regarding habitat on their lands in Addison, Rutland and Bennington Counties.

After Travis's presentation, attendees are welcome to try out the Uprooter, a heavy-duty professional pulling tool as well as other available tools to tackle the buckthorn in the woods behind Monkton Central School. Gloves are recommended when working with buckthorn and other invasives.

The Monkton Conservation Commission plans to hold additional buckthorn removal sessions later this summer and fall. Uprooter tools will also be available for borrowing by landowners who would like to use the tool to remove buckthorn and other invasive trees/shrubs on their property.
