Drag Queen Story Hour will be hosted by The Pizza Stone on Saturday, June 4th at 2 pm and is sure to renew a love of reading and community. Kids of all ages will enjoy the creative theatrics of reading books aloud and singing songs to capture the magical fluidity of childhood. This free, imaginative afternoon performance will be hosted by Katniss Everqueer and Emoji Nightmare, two of Vermont's favorite drag queens. Donations will be accepted towards advancing the health and safety of young LGBTQ+ Vermonters in the local community. The Pizza Stone will reserve a special VIP floor seating area for kids who like to sit close to the stage and all children are invited to enjoy free pizza.
This unique Vermont Drag Queen Story Hour will share books focused on individuality, gender, creativity, expression, and social responsibility. Plus, there will be a very special musical guest performance by the Rev. Yolanda, one of the founders of the New York Public Library Drag Queen Story Hour. In 2017 the New York chapter began Drag Queen Story Hour in the New York Public Library and the Brooklyn Public Library. Drag is performance art and an opportunity meant to inspire children to dream big, be kind, and be their perfect selves. There is an ocean of possibilities to discover when kids can think outside the boxes adults have crafted for them.
Justin Marsh is the Director of Communications and Development at the Pride Center of Vermont in Burlington and spends their free time performing across Vermont as Emoji Nightmare. Emoji can be found all across Vermont supporting LGBTQ+ events and creating intentional queer spaces in rural places. Emoji can even be seen at many Vermont libraries leading the Vermont chapter of Drag Queen Story Hour with Katniss Everqueer.
Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is just what it sounds like...drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress-up is real.
