The Historical Society will offer a chance to meet some early residents of Tinmouth on Sunday June 8 at 2 PM. Grant Reynolds, with help from other members, will lead a tour of some of Tinmouth's cemeteries, leaving from the Town Office. We'll be telling stories about the people buried here. They include 14 known Revolutionary War veterans, plus several other likely ones, and fourteen Civil War soldiers. Despite lack of modern medicine some of our early townspeople lived to great ages. Dr. Theophilus Clark was 97, Judge Thomas Porter, a French and Indian War veteran, 99, and Abigail Carpenter, 100 years and six months. On the other hand, it's sad to see the large number of stones for children under 5. While there are 15 cemeteries in Tinmouth, some of them family sites with as few as a pair of stones, we will concentrate on the Sawyer Cemetery, on Bliss Road just west of the village, the Cramton cemetery on Vt. 140 south of North End Road, and the Tinmouth Cemetery on Vt. 140 east of the village. The Cramton Cemetery has the oldest surviving stone, from May,1794, but the oldest monument in the Tinmouth Cemetery is dated only 3 months later. This tour will be more of a saunter than a hike; but it never hurts to bring water and a snack.
