Juneteenth, a federal holiday, commemorates the end of enslavement in the United States. Although President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, the news did not reach the enslaved people in Texas until former Union soldiers arrived two years later in Galveston, TX to share the Emancipation Proclamation on June 19. Sponsored by Town of Hartford & Hartford Committee on Racial Equity and Inclusion.
