Hello FPF neighbors!
Do you want to better understand the mushrooms and fungi growing around you? My name is Sam Rogers and I'm going to be leading wild mushroom forays this summer and I'd love for you to join me! Fungi are having their moment in our cultural spotlight, and for good reason. The culinary, medicinal, and therapeutic benefits of mushrooms are astounding and will no doubt change our world as we learn more about them.
I invite you to forest bathe through the fungal majesty with me as we learn basic mushroom identification, culinary and medicinal uses of fungi, smartphone-photography tricks and take part in citizen science using the iNaturalist app.
Our first foray will focus on our north eastern variety of the medicinal powerhouse, Reishi. Harvested as medicine for millennia, Ganoderma tsugae, or the Hemlock Varnish Shelf is used to enhance the immune system, reduce stress, improve sleep and so much more. We will learn how to Identify and distinguish it from the other common shelf fungi, sustainable harvesting practices, and preparation techniques so you can feel confident in preserving and consuming your foraged finds.
Forays are open to all ages and abilities, our walks will span at max 2 miles of fairly level ground, moving at a snails pace doing the forager shuffle. Please come prepared to spend a few hours in the forest ie. backpack, water, snacks, bug spray. Hiking shoes or boots are encouraged as well as pants and long socks (we'll be rocking the super stylish Tick-Tuck). BYO-Basket for our foraged finds, I will provide paper bags.
Adults: $40
Teenagers: $10
