Movie Time with Dr. Pete

Dear all,

This Wednesday, May 25th at 6 pm, there will be a FREE screening of Terrence Malick's 'Days of Heaven' (1978) at Catamount Arts! It is being presented as part of Catamount's weekly free Wednesday screenings. This particular film was chosen by me, your friendly neighborhood film-type PhD, as the second of a two film series with the theme "Screening the Invisible."

'What kind of pretentious nonsense is that theme?', you may ask yourself. It's a good question! I really like the idea that films are very good at making things present, right there on the screen – but then what happens if a film wants to show something that isn't there, or doesn't have a form to be photographed? Krzysztof Kieslowski, who directed the first film we watched, said that films have to find methods and tricks to visualize things that don't have a form to be photographed.

'Days of Heaven' has some pretty nifty tricks up its sleeves! A beautiful, painterly movie almost completely filmed during the 'golden hour' of dusk/dawn, the film's tricks are rooted in its studies of nature – it seems as though Malick believes that, if the camera looks carefully enough, it will find reflections of the character's emotions and inner life in nature. Is it successful? Come and find out and share your insight with the rest of us in a post-screening discussion!

And as a bonus to all you haters of subtitles – it's in English! Starring actors in some of their first big roles including Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard, and Linda Manz. And, like all the movies I choose, it's enjoyable and not available on Netflix (quiet, all you Amazon Prime subscribers!).

See you on Wednesday,
Pete
