Past event
May 22, 2022, 2 to 3 PM

The Martha Canfield Library in Arlington is sponsoring a genealogy presentation on the descendants of Lucy Terry and Abijah Prince of Sunderland, Vermont in the library meeting room. Lucy Prince and her children were important early residents of Sunderland. Abijah Prince was an original proprietor of Sunderland in 1761 while living in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Following Abijah's death in 1794 his wife and children relocated to Sunderland to settle on that land. Lucy is recognized as the first published African American poet in the United States for her poem "Bars Fight". She died in 1821, but her children remained in Sunderland until about 1850.

Avis Hayden has more than 30 years of experience in genealogical research with several publications reporting her results. Bill Budde is curator of the Russell Vermontiana Collection in Arlington.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP by calling 802-375-6153 or emailing russell_vermontiana_collection@hotmail.com.
