The Manchester section of the GMC is in need of volunteers for trail work this Saturday. Details are as follows:
Meet at 8am at the Long Trail parking lot at Mad Tom Notch (FR 21) in Peru. Participants will carpool to the limited parking at the end of FR 58 and use the FR 58 side trail to access the LT just south of Griffith Lake. Work south on the LT to the summit of Styles Peak, a distance of 3.3 miles. Then hike out down Styles to the cars at Mad Tom Notch and retrieve the cars at the end of FR 58. Total hiking distance 7.3 miles, about 1200 feet of elevation gain, moderate hike.
The work to be done is cleaning out water bars to improve drainage to decrease erosion during the hiking season. Required tool is either a garden hoe (we have lots of them so you do not need to bring your own tool) or a hazel hoe or pointed shovel.
Bring extra clothing layers, plus a warm hat, work gloves, and a raincoat just in case as this is a rain or shine event (it's actually easier to see the water bars are cleaned well when there is some rain), and bug dope. Also bring fluids, snack and lunch.
RSVP is required- contact leader Dave Ratti at 802-366-0698 or dbrspruce@gmail.com or contact Marge Fish at 802-384-3654 or marge.fish@gmail.com by Friday night.
Lots of hands make this a much easier job, so please help if you can. Hope you see you out there!
