Beginning West African Dance Series
Tuesdays, May 17-June 7
5:30-6:15 at the Capital City Grange Hall in Berlin (just outside Montpelier)
$50 pre-paid for the 4-week series, or $15/class drop-in
minimum class size of 8 pre-paid dancers needed
Come learn traditional West African dances with master dancers and teachers from Guinea! In this 4-week series, Soriba (Simbo) Camara and Seny Daffe will teach traditional dances along with live drumming. Simbo and Seny bring warmth and cultural knowledge to their teaching, so you will not only get a great dance workout but share in a long tradition of drumming and dancing. Its the next-best thing to actual travel! :)
This is a beginner-level class, suitable for brand-new dancers (children also welcome although it is not specifically a children's class) as well as anyone wishing to get back into dancing after this long pandemic. Masks are optional, as the Grange Hall has air filtration systems or (depending on weather) open windows and fans to ensure good air exchange. You can wear any comfortable clothing for dancing, or a traditional lapa (wrap skirt) if you have it. Most dancers prefer to dance barefoot, but if you want to wear shoes please ensure that they are clean indoor-only shoes (no dirt etc) and non-marking to protect the Hall's beautiful new wooden floor.
