Want to learn about and help restore shrub and woodland habitat this weekend? The Vermont Land Trust will be planting trees from 9:00 to noon on Saturday, April 30th at their Whetstone Woods property on Meadowbrook Road in West Brattleboro.
Plantings will happen in old pasture for shrubland bird habitat work. The aim here is to create "islands" of shrubs that will be attractive to birds such as winged warblers, brown thrasher, and eastern towhee. Within some new small openings in the woods, we will be planting in an effort to establish an understory layer that is largely absent due to decades of browsing by overabundant deer. We will be trying some new strategies for protecting the plants, including using brush and tops from the felled trees.
We did a tremendous amount of invasive plant control last year and will follow up with more this year and next. A bit of time at the beginning of the event will describe that work and other demonstration projects on the property looking at alternative invasive plant control options and the effects of overbrowsing by deer.
Look for a sign at the end of the driveway at 101 Meadowbrook Road (according to google maps). From Route 9, it is the second drive on the right after you cross the bridge over the Whetstone Brook.
If you can come, please dress for being outside all morning. We will have some shovels and gloves, but welcome you to bring your own, as well. Please RSVP to Pieter van Loon at pieter@vlt.org or 802-246-1502.
