April is Poetry Month and the Waterbury Public Library is honoring this by offering up a Poetry Night on Tuesday, April 26th. You are invited to come to the SAL room and share your own works, works of a favorite poet, or perhaps you might want to just come and listen.
Why is poetry important? Artists have the ability to bring to life those things we think and care about. Especially in times of strife, trouble and chaos, artists and poets can make sense of the world. By following the paths of emotion, sensitivity and the imagination, the poem transmits knowledge and human values. Because of the potency of the words and the imagery they conjure up, the poem paints a picture and offers us a new way of looking at things. It gives meaning, can reveal truth, and inspires creativity.
Did you know that poetry can activate an Alpha brain wave state? That is the part of your brain that helps you enter a flow state and allows you to do deep work with less effort. Alpha waves induce feelings of calm, increase creativity, and enhance your ability to absorb new information. Poetry often sticks with the reader, causing them to re-read and even memorize the words.
If that's not enough, just come to enjoy your friends, neighbors and the community.
