Earth Day this year is Friday April 22nd and the First Congregational Church of Berlin (1808 Scott Hill Road) will be joining the celebration with a special worship service on Sunday April 24th. at 9:30 a.m.
In our service, we will begin with a haunting flute solo from a collection of Native American stories and songs. We will sing both well-known hymns such as "Morning has Broken" and learn two songs from the New England composer Carolyn McDade. We will have readings of a poem by Wendell Berry and of the Algonquin story of the Corn Mother. Jordan Mensah will provide special music from the traditions of his native Ghana. We will end the service with the benediction "Remember the sky you were born under" by the Muscogee American Poet Laureate Joy Harjo.
Following the service, everyone is invited to the lawn behind the church for the planting of a new heritage-variety apple tree to replace the old apple tree that we had to take down this spring. Please join us for this special Earth Day celebratory service!
