Berlin Elementary School, Garden Work Day, Saturday, May 31

Greetings Garden Enthusiasts,

18 months ago Berlin Elementary School received a Farm to School Grant from the Departments of Agriculture, Education and Health. Since then we have been busy planning, designing, building, planting, harvesting and learning all that can be learned by gardening. We have a few large projects left to finish the creation of this outdoor classroom.

This Saturday, May 31 starting around 8:00, we will be working on a fence and small garden shed. We will also be moving some soil and planting. We are looking for volunteers to help and welcome anyone to stop by and just have a look at this wonderful resource.

I am hoping we can name the garden soon. Quite a while ago we had asked for suggestions and received a few. I would like to propose that we name our school garden the Anne Burke Educational Garden, in memory of Anne Burke, a lifelong Berlin resident and, to my knowledge, the last person to harvest the hay on the school property.

Feel free to email me with your thoughts and ideas about the garden. We will be looking for folks to help with the watering throughout the summer. We are also still looking for perennial plants, berry bushes and fruit trees.

Hope to see you Saturday!

Cindy Gauthier
