Vermont Actors' Repertory Theater presents a compilation of short plays on mental health and mental health awareness written by Vermont playwrights. Following the performances will be a discussion panel facilitated by mental health professionals.
Plays include:
"Eddie at Clearwater" by Jeanne Beckwith - A young woman visits her father on the grounds of the Clearwater Asylum. She comes to see him often, but Eddie rejects her efforts to connect. His anger and guilt are barriers to communication, but she will not give up. A disimpassioned onlooker looks on and comments on their interaction. (Themes of addiction, self-harm, mental illness).
"Cheat a Little" by Sandy Celauro - When Kate confronts her college-aged daughter, Annie with suspicions that she has an eating disorder it opens up a mother/daughter conversation surrounding societal pressures and unrealistic expectations about body image. (Themes of eating disorders, body image).
"Glaciers" by Lesley Becker - Why would a person do nothing when they see a friend is being hurt? After Brianna is assaulted at a college party by the popular boy who was her date, she struggles to understand why her friends did nothing to help her. (Themes of sexual assault)
"Executive Dysfunction" by Dvrora Zipkin - Claire has been having a difficult time, having recently experienced a traumatic event. Nancy is worried about her good friend, who hasn't been responding to her calls and texts. Going over to Claire's house to check on her, Nancy discovers that Claire isn't doing so well, having just experienced a second trauma, exacerbating the first. (Themes of workplace violence, post-traumatic stress disorder).
