I imagine many of you have noticed the amount of roadside trash along our roads and highways. I am always struck by the idea of someone actually rolling down their window and throwing a bottle or wrapper out. Vermont schools teach our children to dispose of litter properly and it has been my experience that children take these lessons seriously. So, we might wonder, where does all this litter come from? Perhaps people don't realize that most of our trash does not decompose over time. Plastic actually never decomposes. It just breaks into smaller pieces. That plastic bag or water bottle tossed out of a car window, will still be there thousands of years from now. Living along Lake Champlain, many of us notice the amount of litter floating in the water and washing up on our shoreline. Green Up Day is a chance for all of us to get outside and pick up those beer bottles and cans, water bottles, candy wrappers and sandwich wrappers. Each one of the Island towns sponsors some sort of Green Up Day activity. So set aside Saturday, May 7th to spiff up your town roads. Get together with friends and spend some time picking up that nasty litter around your neighborhood and along Rt. 2. Let's make Vermont beautiful together!
