Please join local renowned photographer, author, historian, Mr. Alan Nyiri on Friday, June 13th at 7pm at the Poultney Public Library where he will discuss his latest exhibit: The Vermont Church.

“Across New England, as across the country, church affiliation and attendance is falling off at a serious rate. In Vermont, church attendance is heading towards an all-time low. As membership drops, church maintenance budgets are slashed, and many parishes are barely hanging on or are being consolidated. Many of our Vermont churches look worse than they ever have. Many abandoned and desanctified church building are looking for repurposing, or face an uncertain future of either demolition or deterioration and decay. “ Mr. Nyiri highlights three local churches, the East Poultney Baptist Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and the Trinity Episcopal Church. “I have been making photographic images of these three local churches, and many others across the state, for many years. The purpose of this exhibit is to bring light to the peril which our Vermont churches face, and to show how prominent and important they are to the landscape of our towns and villages. I personally cannot imagine a New England landscape devoid of these iconic symbols of our faith and culture, and I hope to begin a discussion about how necessary it is to ensure that they remain a vital part of our communities.”-Alan Nyiri

Mr. Nyiri will also demonstrate “Ruby,” a quadcopter that he has used to obtain breathtaking photographs of these historical buildings.

The Poultney Public Library is honored to host Mr. Nyiri on the eve before the opening of his exhibit at SVAC in Manchester on Saturday, June 14th from 2pm to 5pm.
