"Seed to Market" Youth Program Encourages Kids to Grow and Sell

The Northfield Farmers' Market will be encouraging young people in the community to "grow their own" this summer. The local schools have successfully established a Farm to School Program, taking produce from the school garden to the cafeteria for the children to enjoy. The Northfield Farmers' Market would like to take that experience one step further.

At the Farmers' Market on Tuesday, June 3, kids from Northfield, Roxbury, and surrounding areas can pick up free seed packets and starter plants (3-6pm, while supplies last). The young people can then plant the seeds and starts in their own gardens and reap the rewards later in the summer. On Youth Vendor Day (Tuesday, August 19, 3-6pm), the Northfield Farmers' Market will provide space for these "future farmers" to sell what they've grown all summer long, bringing the "Seed to Market" program full circle.

Not a young farmer, but have other talents? There will be space for you, too. Kid crafters, artisans, bakers and food producers are encouraged to sell their wares on August 19th as well. Please contact Market Manager, Judy Hewett, at 485-8027 for further information or questions.
