Lydia Kern's latest body of work, Passages, is influenced by meditations on love and grief, Western mysticism, memorialization, quilting bees, and rose gardens. The vinyl 'quilts' have objects and plant matter sewn and sealed tightly in place, creating an expansive plane of lightness and transparency, inviting the viewer into the tension between decay and preservation beyond time. Together, the works form a large physical poem composed of large portals containing intimate reliquaries. These works embody multiple translations; from emotion to language, language to material, and material back to emotion.
