General Store Discussion: March 18 at Town Hall/Zoom

Thank you to those who participated in last week's community discussion about revitalizing the Monkton General Store, and to those who couldn't make it but followed up. If you need notes from the session please email me and I'll provide them.

The meeting featured Ben Doyle of the Vermont Preservation Trust, who provided a thorough breakdown of the Community Supported Enterprise model (CSE). This model essentially helps invested residents reimagine infrastructure in a way that services the community, and is funded and run BY the community until it can be sold to a private investor. Whether we choose to pursue CSE or not, we now have the knowledge we need to make it work, thanks to Ben.

By the way, www.PTVermont.org is a great place to make a holiday donation if you're BIG on preserving the rural character of Vermont (Ben donated his time so I hope you don't mind me making a philanthropic pitch on his behalf).

There was also discussion about whether a General Store is the template for community gathering that most people actually want. Other building purposes and spaces are on the table for consideration, as are ideas as to why this initiative would not be beneficial to the community or welcomed by it.

In this follow-up meeting at the Town Hall and online, please come ready to share our ideas pertaining to three major questions:

A- What's great about living here that shouldn't be altered or updated?
B- What do Monkton residents truly want that the town doesn't offer?
C- What community-centric solutions can we implement to provide Bs without sacrificing As?

Look forward to seeing you there!
