It has been an incredibly intense few weeks. The legislature has returned from the town meeting recess to crossover week, which means that policy committees are working hard to get bills out of committee ahead of the deadline for this year. In order to give each body time to work on bills that came from the other chamber this deadline is in place. As always I have put together a town meeting report to highlight the work we have done up to this point and what is on the horizon for us. Of course we cannot predict what will come our way from the senate in the next half of the session but I hope you will take a look at my town meeting report to get a sense of what has been happening. The structure of the legislature is such that we spend most of our time in our own committee, I serve on Government Operations and we have been deeply engaged in the decennial process of redistricting the house districts for the state. That said it is often hard to keep track of what other committees are doing until bills start to come to the floor. https://tanyavforvt.com/2022/03/07/town-meeting-2022/
In more somber news, on February 24, 2022 the Russian government invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine and began the largest European land war since World War 2. As a Ukrainian American myself this news hit particularly close to home. I have been worried for those that I know in Ukraine who are fighting for their lives and sitting here with my family feeling quite helpless to do anything. One thing that I was able to do was sponsor and lead a joint resolution in support of the brave Ukrainian people, their heroic leader President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Russian war protesters. J.R.H.18 https://legislature.vermont.gov/bill/status/2022/J.R.H.18 I was able to speak to the importance of this resolution to me and the larger Ukrainian community here in Vermont on the floor yesterday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4lwJdk-jfA&t=717s
Because of these events I have felt compelled to reconnect to my roots with the Ukrainian American community here in Vermont, we have organized with Rep. Welch's office to host a Ukrainian Solidarity Rally on Sunday March 13, at 1:00pm. The rally will be on the Statehouse Lawn, where we will hear from some of our congressional delegation, the Ukrainian American community and other supporters of ending this war. We will also have donation opportunities available for those who wish to make a financial contribution to humanitarian aid. I hope that you will join us to stand with the people of Ukraine. https://www.facebook.com/events/259194126404905/?ref=newsfeed
If you have questions about legislation you have been following, what is in my report or would like to get more involved in solidarity with Ukraine please do not hesitate to contact me tvyhovsky@leg.state.vt.us I am always happy to discuss things with constituents - this is truly my favorite part of this job.
