Do you know that the Burlington International Airport is seeking to expand? The airport administration wants to expand the airport by another 11 acres, further encroaching on the Chamberlin community. Airport officials have requested that South Burlington rezone 11 acres from residential use to airport use. It is unknown if, in the future, the airport will request more land be rezoned in the Chamberlin neighborhood for airport use.
These 11 acres once contained affordable single family homes that were acquired and demolished using FAA noise mitigation funds (this money came from us, the taxpayers). This newly created open space is currently enjoyed by residents of this working-class neighborhood. Instead of trying to repair the damage done to the Chamberlin community, the airport is now trying to expand further into the community that has already been deeply harmed by the airport's prior decisions. Moreover, they seek to expand airport operations in the middle of a climate crisis, with no viable plan to reduce their aviation related emissions.
A group, Stop the Airport Expansion Coalition, formed to oppose this rezoning request, is meeting this Thursday, March 10th, at 7pm on Zoom to discuss plans to prevent more airport expansion. If you are concerned about the climate impacts of an expanding airport and the harm being done to the nearby working class community, join in the effort to stop this expansion.
