Join the Community Senior Center virtually on February 28 for Kevin Trainor's program about Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon. It's been called the "pearl of the Indian Ocean"because of its great natural beauty. Slightly larger than the state of West Virginia and with a population approaching 23 million people, the small island nation is situated just below the southern coast of India, a country with which it shares deep cultural and ethnic ties. It has been a major historical center of Theravada Buddhism, a religious tradition first brought to the island in the third century BCE.

Today Sri Lanka is a center of great cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity, and it preserves within its small compass a remarkable abundance of ancient historical remains, including six cultural and two natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The island's great physical beauty, ranging from the mountainous central hill country to its encircling ring of gorgeous beaches, annually draws millions of tourists. Trainor, a professor in the UVM Religion Department, will explore in his program a sampling of these natural and cultural riches, with some attention to places of importance to Sri Lankan Buddhists.
