The Central Vermont OLLI Spring 2022 Speaker and Film Series

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) of the University of Vermont announces the spring, 2022 lineup of programs for the Central Vermont region.

The 6 speaker events will be held at the Montpelier Senior Activity Center at 58 Barre St in Montpelier, VT . Masks are required.

Wednesday March 2, 1:30 pm. Vermont State Refugee Director Tracey Dolan will discuss the mission of the new State office and its challenges and opportunities to welcome refugees and immigrants to Vermont. The office has the goal to provide safe and welcoming homes and to promote full participation in the economic, social and civic life in Vermont.

Wednesday, March 9, 1:30 pm. Filmmaker Susan Bettmann will discuss her series of documentaries about Vermonters. Ms Bettmann will show her film Joe Picard: Man of the Land focusing on woodsman Joe Picard who cares for his Middlesex land, throughout the season. Joe's knowledge of the land is influenced by his Native American and French Canadian roots and highlights a way of life that is fast disappearing.

Wednesday, March 16, 1:30 pm National Book Award Finalist Kekla Magoon, author of Revolution in Our Time: The Black Panther Party's Promise to the People. Ms. Magoon will discuss research, inspirations and contemporary context for her nonfiction book exploring the history and legacy of the Black Panther Party.

Wednesday, March 23, 1:30 pm Join Sustainability Educator Tom Sabo and members of the Montpelier High School Earth Group to discuss the Climate Crisis: Science and Psychology. Students from the Earth Group and VT Youth Lobby will share recent data on climate change along with their thoughts and concerns about the crisis and its impact on their lives and future.

Wednesday, March 30, 1:30 pm Author Reeve Lindbergh, Memory and Writing. Ms Lindbergh, daughter of authors/aviators Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, has written several memoirs. Ms Lindbergh will discuss her own work and that of other writers including older adults she has taught and helped to self-publish.

Wednesday, April 6, 1:30 pm Author and former journalist Chris Graff will discuss Why Vermont is What America Wants to Be. There is good reason that Jim Jeffords' 2001 declaration of independence, Bernie Sanders' presidential campaigns of 2016 and 2020 and Howard Dean's presidential campaign of 2004 caught fire with the nation. Mr. Graff details what makes Vermont special.

Next, author and Film Guru Rick Winston will lead 3 weeks of a road film series held at the Savoy Theater at 26 Main St in Montpelier on Wednesday afternoons at 1:30. The road movie has been a tried-and-true staple of films for almost 100 years.

Wednesday April 13, 1:30 pm – "It Happened One Night" (1934). This granddaddy of the genre was directed by Frank Capra and stars Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable. It's only one of three films that have won five academy awards.

Wednesday, April 20, 1:30 pm –" Wild Strawberries" (1957) Ingmar Bergman's masterpiece, often considered to be one of the finest films ever made.

Wednesday, April 27, 1:30 pm – "Almost Famous": (2000) Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical film is a comedy- drama coming of age memoir. Starring Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand and Kate Hudson, follows a searching teenager who goes on tour with a rock band while trying to have his first major writing published.
