From Chittenden County Forester Ethan Tapper:
Hi all,
I'm reaching out to share a virtual event coming up this week, another chance to catch my presentation on old forests. If you're interested in the forest management projects underway at the Hinesburg Town Forest or the Westford Town Lands, this is a good opportunity to learn more about the principles guiding our work (besides learning more about what old forests are like!).
We will also be hosting an in-person event in Westford later in the month -- more info below. If you couldn't make it to one of the walks at the Hinesburg Town Forest (or didn't come because it was too cold), you'll have another chance to check out the project when I lead another walk there with City Market on March 12.
Read my article for this month, a tribute to E.O. Wilson, here: https://mcusercontent.com/58398f7a782118e355bf99377/files/6b39130a-76e2-a3a6-af27-d0fd98224b[...]pdf
If you wish to reprint or distribute this article, please give me a heads-up!
UPCOMING EVENTS
Old Forests: What They Are, Why They're Important, and Opportunities for Management Thursday, February 17, 2022 Time: 7:00 – 8:00 pm Many of us are drawn to the idea of old forests. But what are old forests, and what role should they play in our modern world? Join the Hardy Plants Club of Vermont and Ethan Tapper, the Chittenden County Forester for the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, for a presentation about what eastern old forests are like (it may surprise you!), why they are important and how we can use lessons gleaned from old forests to inform thoughtful, regenerative forest management in Vermont.
To attend use the link here: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87530930206 (no registration is needed).
For information contact Victoria Weber, at: wdimock@sover.net
Micro-scale Forest Management at the Maple Shade Town Forest Saturday, February 26 1:00 – 3:00 PM Join Ethan Tapper, the Chittenden County Forester for the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, and Vermont Woodlands Association for a walk of a forest management project being implemented at the Maple Shade Town Forest (MSTF) in Westford.
In addition to discussing forests, forest ecology and forest management in general, this walk will focus on the equipment being used to at MSTF: a small (50 horsepower) tractor and PTO winch. This type of equipment has been used by loggers, farmers, and landowners to manage Vermont's forests for generations, but today it is rarely used in a commercial context. Ethan and the logger, Evan Aiken, will discuss the benefits, trade-offs, and limitations of micro-scale logging and where and when it is appropriate.
To join the walk of the MSTF, meet at 1:00 PM at the Westford School on Brookside Road in Westford, ~ 1 mile south of the intersection with VT-128. Be dressed for the weather and ready to walk on slippery and uneven surfaces.
