The Warren Public Library will be hosting a presentation by Roxbury resident Ryan Zajac about beekeeping and how to start your first hive. He is a beekeeper with eight years of experience in the field and has facilitated many workshops, classes, and conferences on beekeeping. Ryan is a member of several state and local beekeepers’ associations.
It has often been said that bees are responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat. Most crops grown for their fruits (including vegetables such as squash, cucumber, tomato, and eggplant), nuts, seeds, fiber (such as cotton), and hay (alfalfa grown to feed livestock), require pollination by insects. Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the male parts of a flower to the female parts of a flower of the same species, which results in fertilization of plant ovaries and the production of seeds. The main insect pollinators, by far, are the bees, and sadly, their numbers are plummeting at the hands of the increasing toxicities of chemical pesticides.
COME LEARN MORE about the supreme importance of bees from master beekeeper Ryan Zajac. He will be speaking to us on the following topics and others on the night of June 5, at 7:00 pm at the library:
