John Aberth is back ! Aberth, a VT wildlife rehabber, recently told the story of his rescue and raising of two beaver kits. We decided to get him and his fabulous storytelling skills, back to talk about "The History of the Plague." Aberth, 58, is a medieval historian with a doctorate from Cambridge University in England and his area of expertise is the plague.

By any measure, the Black Death was one of the most important events in the history of the world. This pandemic was caused by plague, a bacterial disease, which had a case fatality rate of 80%. Historians characterize it as the greatest natural disaster in the history of humankind. In a short span of time nearly 60% of Europe's inhabitants were wiped out. Not only did every other person die from the disease, but almost every survivor had been touched by it. It is worth hearing about because it provides a baseline comparison for pandemics today.
