Day and time: February 10 at 1:30 PM to 2:30

In 1832, Nathaniel Hawthorne arrived in Burlington, and as he strolled up from the harbor to the city center, he observed that it was a lovely place filled with immigrants, especially the Irish and French Canadians. Indeed, he noticed the French language in the streets. He also observed that many of the houses had metal roofs in the design of those he observed in Montreal. By the time of Hawthorne's visit, French Canadians had long been citizens of the Champlain Valley. Between 1815 and 1845, the population of French Canadians expanded to become among the majority of immigrants and threatened to overwhelm the so-called old Yankees. On February 10 at 1:30, Susan Ouellette, former St. Michael's professor, will explain what called them into the North Country and more. This is a virtual presentation.
