Stephen Bates: from Slave to Sheriff – Bixby Library

Past event
Feb 26, 2022, 1 to 2:30 PM

The remarkable life of Vermont's first known Black Sheriff and Chief of Police will be presented by the Bixby Library in this special Online Black History Month program. Videographer Chris Spencer takes us behind the scenes during the dedication of the roadside historic marker honoring Stephen Bates in 2021. Then meet Bates' great-grandsons Nick and Larry Schuyler, historians Jane Williamson and Jeannette Greenwood, and other community members who came together to rediscover and share this story. Join us on Zoom to view rare early documents, maps, and photographs of Stephen Bates' world, followed by discussion and Q & A. Find out more about Stephen Bates by checking out the exhibit at Bixby Library or reading about it online. The documentary will also be available for viewing on Saturday February 12th in the Bixby Library Community Room.
