Chittenden Asylum Seekers Assistance Network (CASAN)
Did you know that there is a grassroots non-profit group of volunteers in Chittenden County that assists local families who are in the legal process of seeking asylum in our country? Asylum seekers, unlike refugees, are not allowed to receive many kinds of government assistance, nor are they are allowed to work until reaching a certain point in the asylum process. And so, over the past years, our group has fully supported several families for all living expenses, assisted other households in significant ways, and has impacted the lives of even more through our statewide network with similar groups.
Come to hear uplifting stories of these resilient people who are fleeing from persecution in their home countries and are building new lives in our community. Learn about on-going challenges that they and other asylum seekers face in Vermont, and what might be done to improve their situations. And hear what our volunteer teams have been doing, as well as current needs and practical ways to help welcome our new neighbors.
