Chaga: Sustainable Use, Growth Habits, and Therapeutic Alternatives
with Arielle Bareket of Golden Bones Botanicals
Thursday, January 20th from 6-8pm on Zoom
A slow growing fungus of the Northern forests across the globe, Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) has been beloved and used medicinally by humans for thousands of years. Revered for its antioxidant, anti inflammatory, antitumor and antiviral actions, Chaga's use has grown exponentially in recent years as it has risen in mainstream popularity. The high demand for this organism coupled with unsustainable foraging practices and difficulties with cultivation has created concern around long term availability, as significant population decline is being observed.
In this two hour class, we will discuss in depth the materia medica of Chaga to bring us into a more informed and reciprocal relationship with this fungus. We will look at Chaga's slow and fragile growth habits and how that massively impacts the sustainability of harvest. We will discuss Chaga's medicinal properties, focusing on traditional use as well as scientific research with a larger focus on therapeutic alternatives that can be used in place of this precious and disappearing medicine.
