Relocalizing VT, Thursday: Medicine is Ill; Winter Driving

Past event
Jan 6, 2022, 9 to 10:30 AM

Thursday morning on Central Vermont Community Radio: Perspectives on medicine and winter road safety, from both sides.

A retired surgeon says the US medical system is ill and needs to be redone entirely; the director of the Vermont Agency of Transportation talks about winter road safety in Vermont, in light of the blizzard that trapped motorists for a full day on Virginia's I-95.

9:00 - 10:00 am
Retired surgeon Michael J. Young, in The Illness of Medicine, examines medical treatment from both sides of the table, the health care provider and the patient. This includes the significant obstacles patients endure, as well as the exasperation many of the truly dedicated medical professionals feel. He says the controlling arrogance of the insurance industry and the clout of pharmaceutical companies have become overwhelming. His idea of a solution is Bernie approved: a single-payer health system.

From Monday night to Tuesday night this week, motorists were stuck on a 50-mile stretch of I-95 in Virginia, after traffic multiple crashes in a snow and ice storm snarled traffic. But why did so many people choose to drive into a snow and ice storm? Many drivers were disappointed with the state response—should state officials and workers be disappointed in the motorists? Todd Law, Maintenance and Operations Director at the Vermont Agency of Transportation, will talk about what drivers can expect from road crews, what road crews expect from drivers, and what Vermont would do if large numbers of drivers got stranded on the interstate in a snow and ice storm.
