Relocalizing VT: Time for a Pause

Past event
Dec 30, 2021, 9 to 10:30 AM

Thursday morning on Central Vermont Community Radio: Good advice for the winter season on how and why to take a pause; a Black Bronx farmer on food justice for everyone.

9:00 - 10:00 am
We live in a world of instant everything, so life pauses seem negative. What if pauses ensure protection, provide time for preparation, or help to develop patience? Waiting may be the catalyst for successfully navigating what lies ahead in many areas of life. Candy Arrington discusses these themes in her book Life on Pause: Learning to Wait Well.

People in poor urban and rural communities are told that if they want food security, all they have to do is grow their own vegetables, give up soda, exercise and, as if by magic, eating vegetables and drinking water will solve the food system's problems, without looking at the institutional, environmental and structural determinants that reinforce racism in today's society. So does the food system need to be fixed or does it need to change? Co-Owner and Farmer at Rise & Root Farm, and Co-Founder of Black Urban Growers Karen Washington explores the topic in a keynote address at the 2021 virtual Common Ground Country Fair, hosted by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.
