VTSSM Red Bench Series: Brief History of the Snowboard

Past event
Dec 2, 2021, 7 to 8:30 PM

Snowboarding is older than you think, and collector Peter Radacher will join Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum virtually from his home in Austria to give a lesson on the history of snowboarding and talk about his new book "Boards - A Brief History Of The Snowboard", as part of the Museum's monthly Red Bench Series, on Thursday, December 2nd at 7:00 PM.

Radacher and Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum Hall of Fame Member, JG Gerndt will take us on a journey starting in the 15th century and ending with the modern boards we ride today.

Radacher grew up in Austria. As a child, he was already drawing his lines into the powder when the term freeriding did not even exist. Besides running the familiy hotel and ski area, Radacher built his own snowboard museum. With over 800 boards, he'll be talking about the primeval grandparents of the snowboard from the 16th century, standing sideways toys from the '60s, the first snowboard-like models of the '70s from Sims, Winterstick, and Burton, to the boards of modern times. Building a museum alone wasn't enough for Peter to express his love for snowboarding; he has now poured his passion onto the pages of this book.

JG Gerndt will join Radacher for this discussion. He assisted Peter in the creation of his book and his love for sliding on snow has shaped his life. He is best known for his role in designing revolutionary surf-inspired boards like the Fish, Malolo, Nug, and Resonator. He's built boards for legendary riders like Terje Haakonsen, Kelly Clark, Danny Davis, Red Gerard, Chloe Kim, along with fellow Hall-of-Famers Jake and Donna Carpenter, Jeff Brushie, and Ross Powers (to name a few). JG still spends his winter days on snow, riding and testing a variety of boards in his continuous effort to enhance and advance the snowboarding world.

Radacher will be Zooming in from Austria, and Gerndt from his home in Stowe, VT. Visit www.vtssm.org/new-events to reserve a ticket. A $10 donation is appreciated. Series sponsors include r.k. Miles, AJ's Ski & Sports, Sisler Builders, and Vermont Ski + Ride.
