When members of Northsong, a community chorus here in the Northeast Kingdom, received a request to sing again after almost two years of silence, their responses were loud and clear: "Count me in!" On Friday, December 17, Northsong singers will join members of Vermont's premier a cappella vocal group, Counterpoint, for a live concert at the United Church of Newport at 7:30 PM.
The Vermont Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet will join forces with Counterpoint, under the direction of Nathaniel G. Lew, to ring in the holidays in style! This year's program includes Elizabeth Poston's beloved "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree," carols by American composers Alice Parker, Amy Beach, and William Levi Dawson, and the rollicking Nigerian Christmas song "Betelehemu." Vermont is represented by a Robert De Cormier favorite and traditional European carols from the Trapp Family Songbook. Northsong will join the ensemble in singing "Alleluia" composed by North Troy native David Horn. The brass selections range from soulful to sparkling, including the world premiere of a student composition.
