I am very pleased to announce that our school will host a screening of the new Bess O'Brien film, The Hungry Heart, on Thursday, June 5th, beginning at 6:30 p.m., in the school library. The event is free and open to the public.

A Kingdom County Productions film, set in St. Albans, Vermont, The Hungry Heart provides a look at the hidden world of prescription drug addiction through Vermont Pediatrician Fred Holmes's dedicated work with patients struggling with this disease. It reveals the tragic impact of prescription opiate abuse and addiction on Vermont's young people, their families, and their communities. The film features the profound connection between the doctor and his patients and shines a light on the healing power of conversation and the need for connection that many young addicts yearn for but do not have in their lives.

Major concepts included in the film include:

* Everyone is at risk of drug addiction. Children in particular represent a powerful combination of unrestrained curiosity and exceptional vulnerability. They face cultural and peer pressure, social anxiety, family trauma, and stress. Too many of them turn to prescription opiates as a means of escape.

* Prescription drug abuse is a problem everywhere. In 2008, 14,800 Americans died from prescription pain killer overdoses - more than by cocaine and heroin combined. In 2010, more than 12 million Americans reported abusing prescription drugs. Across the nation, this epidemic is destroying lives, shattering families, draining resources and undermining communities.

* Drug addiction is a disease, not a moral failure. There is hope.

* The film will discuss how opiate addiction begins, as well as the physical and psychological issues associated with the disease. It will cover the role of brain chemistry, habitual use, methods of drug use, addiction and withdrawal, and the four stages of recovery.

* Building awareness about the epidemic of prescription drug abuse is essential to change.

In addition to screening the film, some of those who tell their stories in the film will be present to talk about their experiences and answer questions.

This opportunity is appropriate for all parents and adult community members, but probably not for elementary age students. It contains realistic subject matter and strong language.
