On Sunday, May 25, at 2 PM (rain date, May 26 at 2 PM), there will be a narrated walking tour of Hillside Cemetery in Castleton, led by Don Thompson, local author, historian and historical society trustee. Don will conduct a tour of 12 Civil War veterans' gravesites and tell a little about each soldier (about 250 men from Castleton served in the Civil War -- 249 Union soldiers, and one Confederate.) One local hero, Salmon P. Gates, died of wounds received at Gettysburg; his little bloodstained bible was returned by a fellow soldier to Gates' widow, and is now property of the historical society.
