THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST: a presentation by film scholar Rick Winston, author of "Red Scare in the Green Mountains: Vermont in the McCarthy Era."
In the late 1940'S through the early 1960's, many screenwriters, directors, and actors were victims of the "Red Scare." They were rendered unemployable due to their refusal to both testify before congressional committees and to inform on others. Rick Winston will explore the origins of the blacklist in Hollywood's labor unrest, the mechanics of how it worked, and what led to its ultimate end. He'll show clips from newsreels and interviews, and from several films that were affected by the fear that consumed Hollywood, including "The Front," "High Noon," "On the Waterfront," and "Salt of the Earth."
Admission is $10 at the door. The Hooker Dunham Theater is at 139 Main Street in Brattleboro. For more information, call 802-454-7103
